Well, it's been an interesting and fun 1st quarter of 2010.  We've covered lots of fun things so far such as Strikes Right & Left off of Right/Left Straights and Right/Left Hooks.  The more senior students are working on smooth and flow while enhancing their ability to feel the opponents intentions.  The beginning students are working on the basic form & function of the entries as well as the concepts and principles that allow them to work.

We're hoping to have an outdoor self defense class as soon as the ground gets a little drier from all the rain we just got and when it gets a little warmer.  I'm hoping for either the end of April or sometime in May 2010.  This class will be open to everyone, both CSE members and non-members.

CSE is now on Twitter!!  Go to the Follow Us! page on our website to join the conversation on Twitter.  We'll do our best to keep you posted on CSE and local martial arts events/news.

Exciting news!  Sigung Alfred Del Rosario (my Dad!) has received an acceptance certificate into the Ordonez Ohana!  Frank Ordonez is one of the co-founders of Kajukenbo by contributing his jujitsu skills to the blended style.  For more information on Frank Ordonez and Kajukenbo, go to
http://ordonezkajukenbo.com/ABOUT-OKO.html or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kajukenbo.  They are now working on paperwork to give him his professorship!

That's all for now!  Until the next posting... stay safe and always remember to "Keep Moving Forward!" (Guro Sean Christensen)

CSE Boston
Training to fight in tight spaces
(Posted on 6.22.09)

Hello everyone!

As Brian always tells us "We're all trying to get to the top of the mountain, we
just take different paths to get there."

Most of you know that CSE-Boston is based on the teachings of Angel Cabales
called serrada escrima. Serrada escrima is the basic stick fighting, 12 strikes
and 36 counters that we've all come to know and love. It is the foundation of
Combat Serrada Escrima. In order to become a Basic Instructor, you must
proficiently demonstrate and understand the fundamentals of stick fighting and
the basic strikes and counters.

Combat Serrada Escrima is not just the stick fighting, but also the concepts and
principles of how we fight and why we fight the way we do. It's not a set of
standard techniques, but more the building blocks to create your own techniques.
In order to become a CSE Instructor, you must proficiently demonstrate and
understand the fundamentals of stick fighting, the 12 strikes and 36 counters,
all the concepts and principles, and show the ability to translate between
stick, knife, and empty hand fighting amongst other items.

With these two paths, we have been able to certify several students as Basic
Instructors in serrada escrima. Now, we've recently been able to promote one of
our students on the Combat Serrada Escrima path.

On Thursday, June 18, 2009, Rob Askew was officially awarded a "Blue Belt" in
Combat Serrada Escrima. Although he is still training on his ability to
demonstrate proficiency in his use of sticks, his demonstration and use of empty
hand and knife fighting skills has progressed beyond expectations. Although
CSE-Boston doesn't really have a belt system, we decided that his empty hand and
knife fighting skills were equal to that of a Basic Instructor in serrada
escrima and is therefore equivalent to a Blue Belt.

Please help me to congratulate Rob on all his dedication and hard work that has
brought him to this level of training.

Congratulations Rob!!

Good afternoon,

Guro Brian and I are proud to introduce CSE-Boston's newest Basic Instructor!
On Tuesday, May 26, 2009, David Kitchen received his Basic Instructor
certification! Through his dedication to the system and after many hours of
practice, he was able to demonstrate his knowledge and proficiency in the core
aspects of serrada escrima.
Congratulations David!

On another note, due to scheduling conflicts, CSE-Boston will be closed on
Thursday, May 28th and Thursday, June 4th.

Have a great rest of the week!

As some of you may know, I come from a martial arts heritage of Kajukenbo practioners.  Even though I do not practice Kajukenbo, I still feel linked to the system having grown up in it.

If you haven't heard by now, the Kajukenbo family has lost two of its most talented, skilled, and inspiring masters.  Sijo Adriano Emperado, the founder of Kajukenbo, passed away in his sleep in Saturday, April 4, 2009.  Two days later on Monday, April 6th, GrandMaster Allen Abad, Kajukenbo practioner and my father's best friend of 40 years, passed away after a two year battle with pancreatic cancer.

I wasn't able to find much as far as articles go on either of the two, but the one I did find was on this website:  http://kajukenboarizona.blogspot.com/.  You can also find some conversation on the subject on both MartialTalk.com and KajukenboCafe.com.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the Emperado and Abad Families as well as all those in the Kajukenbo family.  As fellow martial artists, we have all been touched by the lives of Sijo Emerado and GM Abad in some way or another.  Their lives and dedication to the system will be remembered for all time.

Hello everyone!

We hope you all had a wonderful and somewhat stress-free holiday.  I know it'll be tough getting back into training after being closed for two weeks, but I'm sure you all can manage it.

Also, please help me to congratulate Billy Browne.  During yesterday's class, he was unexpectedly promoted to Basic Instructor.  Yay Billy!

In the short period of time he has been with us, Billy has shown incredible progress and dedication to the art. Now, his responsibilities will be to teach the basics and coach others in their training.  Congratulations Guro Billy!

We look forward to promoting more students in the future and to continuing all of your training.

CSE-Boston wishes everyone a happy, safe, and prosperous new year!

The holiday season is upon us and now is a time when everyone goes home to celebrate it with their families.  Although, Brian and I won't be going anywhere, we are closing the school the week of Christmas and the week of New Years (December 21st to January 4th).  Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 6, 2009.

We understand that this is a long period of time, but at least you can relax and enjoy the holidays without worrying about missing a class.

Please feel free to contact either of us if you have any questions.

A big huge thanks to all the members of our Yahoo! group who have stuck with us this past year!

And for those members of the group who do not come to our classes, stay safe and warm and have a wonderful holiday season!  Maybe we'll see you in class sometime in 2009!

Merry Christmas at Manigong Bagong Taon!

(Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!)

Happy Election Day!

I hope everyone had a chance to go out and vote today!

We'd like to welcome the following students who have joined us this fall:

Rob Askew
Billy Browne
Antonio Da Silva
Chris Pegues

They have been doing very well and continue to progress in their training.

We no longer have the 6pm Self Defense class due to availability conflicts and lack of student participation.  Because of this, we will begin planning Self Defense Seminars to make up for the class and open them to the public.  If anyone is interested in hosting these seminars with us or has an idea of where we can hold these seminars, please feel free to contact us at 617-513-3526 or send and email to info@combatserrada.com.

Thanks!

Trish

I'd like to formally welcome the new students who have joined us this

summer:

Joel Applewiathe - started June 2008

Trace Hamrick - started July 2008

They are both doing very well so far and are very excited to have joined our school.

In September 2008, we will be starting a 12 week stick intensive program to get people up to speed on the 12 strikes and 36 counters.  We realized that some people have been with us for awhile and have not seen strikes/counters past #6.  Week #1 will cover strike #1 and it's 3 basic counters.  Week #2 will cover strike #2 and it's 3 basic counters.  This will continue for 12 weeks until we have covered all 12 strikes and their counters.  It is important for you to make it to every class if you intend on participating in this program.  During this program, we will not be covering any of the principles or concepts.  This program will run during the 7p to 8p portion of the class. This stick intensive class is NOT just for beginners.  This class is open to and valuable for ALL levels of students.

Also in September, I’m planning on adding a self defense class from 6pm to 7pm.  This class is open to everyone: male, female, old & new.  The class will focus specifically on self defense techniques without getting too much into the CSE concepts and principles.  If you know anyone wanting to learn self defense only, please feel free to pass this information on to them.

The advanced instructor training class will also start in September, but will only be held on the second Wednesday of every month from 7p to 9p.

This class is only for those who are certified basic instructors.

We are also getting ready to start taping for the next volume in our DVD training series.  This will possibly happen on Saturday, August 9th.  If you don’t mind being  in the video, feel free to come to class that day to help us out.  Taping will begin at 12noon and continue until about 3p or 4p.  If you have any questions regarding this day, please call Brian at 617-869-0516.

That’s all I have for now.  If there’s something I missed, let me know and I’ll try to address it.  Hope to see some of you in class tonight.  We do have someone coming to check out our class tonight so it would be great if some of you could be there to talk about the class.

Take care… be safe… and see you all soon!!

(Posted 2.22.08)

Hi guys!

We've changed the class schedule and will no longer have classes on Wednesdays.  Classes are now Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7p-8p and 8p-9p and Saturday afternoons from 12noon to 1:30p.

Thank you all for your patience over the last two months while we worked to figure out the best schedule for all of us.

(Posted 1.4.08)

Hi,

A few weeks ago, I sent out a message asking what everyone thought
about cancelling classes on Wednesdays and got mixed reponses. Some
of you were ok with the idea and others felt Thursdays would be a
better day to cancel. Here's what we came up with: we're going to
alternate days. We will have classes every Tuesday and Saturday.
This week, CSE - Boston will be closed on Tuesday for New Year's Day
and on Wednesday. There will be class on Thursday. For next week,
there will be class on Wednesday, but the school will be closed on
Thursday. Make sense? Check out the calendar on the group page to
see the schedule. We'll try this out for two months and then see how
everyone feels about it. If it works, then we'll keep it. If not,
we'll have to decide which day to permanently cancel.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns regarding
this change.

Thank you and have a Happy New Year!

Brian and Trish

Congratulations to Guro Oliver!

A big congratulations to Oliver De Leon! He received his certification as a Basic Instructor in the art of Cabales Serrada Escrima under CSE-Boston on Saturday, December 29, 2007.

Congratulations Oliver!!

Congratulations to Guro Martin!

Martin Kemp received his Basic Instructor certification today!  He has worked very hard over the years to become proficient in the 12 strikes and 36 counters of serrada.  Martin will be an excellent instructor to carry on the principles of CSE-Boston.  Please feel free to use him as a resource since teaching and training others will now be a large part of his own training and development as a martial artist.

Great job Martin!
